Jolla has released its Sailfish X operating system for the Sony Xperia 10 smartphones. It is the latest phone on which the operating system of the Finnish maker runs. The Xperia 10 runs Android by default.

They are also the first devices on which Sailfish encrypts storage by default, says Jolla. This is not the case with other supported phones, including the Planet Gemini and Sony Xperia XA2. There is a free version of Sailfish, but those who want to run Android apps and updates for the life of the device will have to purchase a license for currently thirty euros.

Jolla has also made it clear that Android support for the older Xperia X will remain on Android 4.4. Newer models have support for 8.1, but that’s not possible on the Xperia X without an upgrade running through a PC. After that, Jolla would have to maintain two versions of the software and the company is not prepared to do that.
