Microsoft showed the first gameplay footage of Age of Empires IV, the new entry in the company’s RTS series, at the X019 event for Xbox. The statues show a medieval city under siege by eastern warriors.

Age of Empires IV looks set to be a significantly more detailed game than previous titles, although judging by the basic video, it’s also a familiar title in the franchise at the same time, with city walls, towers, mills, castles, and trebuchets. Incidentally, it is not about actual images as the game will be played, but a fly-over that should give an impression of images during gameplay. For example, the interface is also not visible.

Microsoft announced two years ago that Age of Empires IV was being worked on, but things have been quiet around the game ever since. The game is being developed by Relic Entertainment, known for the Company of Heroes games and the Warhammer 40,000 series of strategy games, among others.

In the meantime, Age of Empires Definitive Edition has been released and such a version of Age of Empires II will be released on November 14, followed by a Definitive Edition of Part III. Age of Empires III originally appeared in 2005.
