John Carmack quits Oculus technical chief

John Carmack steps down as chief technical officer of Oculus. He will still remain involved with the company and will give advice, but according to him that will not take much time. Carmack is going to work on artificial intelligence.

Carmack announces his career switch on Facebook. There he says that he thinks he can contribute something in the field of artificial intelligence and that he will do so from home for the time being. However, he will remain an employee of Facebook, the company confirms to Variety.

The CEO will remain involved with Oculus as a consulting CTO. According to Carmack, in that role he will continue to advise on the development of the company’s VR equipment, but it will only take a modest amount of his time. It has not yet been announced who will be his successor within Oculus.

John Carmack is one of the founders of id Software, the studio that started in 1991 and made fame with games like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake. When the Oculus Rift started as a Kickstarter project in 2012, he dedicated himself to the promotion of VR glasses. In 2013, he left the game studio to join Oculus as a CTO.
