Samsung has signed an agreement with 20th Century Fox for 4k content from the Hollywood studio. Both parties speak of a ‘UHD Content Ecosystem’, in which films and series are brought to Samsung’s Smart Hub platform in 4k.

Smart Hub is Samsung’s smart TV platform, but it is not known in what form 20th Century Fox’s content will come to the manufacturer’s UHDTVs. The parties only talk about a ‘safe and sustainable UHD ecosystem’. It is an extension of an earlier agreement, dated January this year, regarding a UHD Video Pack: a hard drive with 4k movies that Samsung will deliver in April in the US for 299 dollars.

Perhaps it is a similar initiative to Sony’s online video store, which offers films and TV series in 4k resolution. That UHD material is only available to owners of Sony’s 4k media player and an UHD television of the same brand.

Samsung and the other TV providers are working hard to remove one of the obstacles to the success of UHDTVs with a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels, namely the lack of content. Earlier this year, Netflix and Amazon also signed agreements with the TV manufacturers to stream 4k video. It is also waiting for the arrival of blu-ray for 4k. That standard should be ready by the end of this year.
