Steam adds support for 8k resolution to Remote Play feature
Steam lets users stream games in 8k resolution. That option has been added to the Remote Play feature. Steam is also removing the option to invite a player without a Steam account to Remote Play Together from beta.
The option to stream in 8k resolution can be found in the Remote Play settings under the Advanced Client Settings button. Valve notes that the “results depend on the hardware,” presumably referring to the large amount of computing power needed to render games in 8k resolution.
In order to stream games in an 8k resolution, the client must also support that resolution. Valve’s proprietary Steam Link hardware supports up to 1080p resolution. For 8k a PC will have to be used with a video card that supports 8k display.
The new release also added the ability to invite a player without a Steam account via the Remote Play Together feature. This has already been tested in a beta. The invitee must have Steam or Steam Link installed, but does not need an account to participate in a game. The feature is intended to allow remote play of “local multiplayer games” with each other. Steam has a list of games that are compatible with Remote Play Together.
