The 1.4.0.39 version of Skype for Mac OS X, released at the end of April, was quickly taken offline by the developers shortly after its release. This version was not properly tested and was put online prematurely. However, the developers have just released a working version of Skype for Mac OS X in the form of 1.4.0.49. The update is from this server as a dmg file and has exactly the same changelog as its predecessor. Skype allows you to call other users via Voice-over-IP, as it were. This does not require a subscription, just bandwidth to send the voice data back and forth. It is also possible to take out a subscription with which calls can be made to fixed and mobile telephone numbers in your own country and to numbers abroad. Version 1.4.0.49 is a so-called Universal Binary, which means that both PowerPC and Intel Macs can use the program:

  • new feature: Universal binary: Skype is now made to run natively on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Mac computers
  • new feature: Web presence: Show your Skype status on the web and in your email signature
  • new language: Traditional Chinese
