Modder makes fully working ‘GameCube-Joy-Cons’ for Nintendo Switch
A hardware mud has created a set of Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons from a GameCube controller. According to him, the controllers feel exactly like a GameCube controller and have all the buttons and functionalities of Joy-Cons.
To be precise, it’s not the standard GameCube controller, but a WaveBird. That’s Nintendo’s official, somewhat rare nowadays, GameCube wireless controller. This one used the modder, called Shank Mods, because all the parts simply fit better in there. The feel of a WaveBird is similar to that of a regular GameCube controller.
However, there are some differences between Joy-Cons and GameCube controllers: Joy-Cons have a second shoulder button, extra buttons on the front and a gyroscope. Shank Mods has been working on it for months, but finally managed to create a set of GameCube Joy-Cons that feel exactly like a GameCube controller, but have every Joy-Con functionality: batteries, hd rumble, amiibo support, clicky sticks and more.
Shank Mods has created a very comprehensive build log of the entire process, including visiting a fellow mod and sending the project to another modder for an outsourced part. Note that he emphasizes that this project was difficult and expensive and therefore not suitable for a beginner.
