Xbox Live and part Microsoft Azure platform had problems
Microsoft’s Xbox Live game service experienced significant downtime during the night from Sunday to Monday. The outage coincided with the outage of part of Microsoft’s Azure cloud service. One US region of that service suffered a power outage.
Various Xbox Live services and the streaming service Mixer, among others, had to deal with disruptions. Users couldn’t login and matchmaking didn’t work either. These have now been rectified. When this message was created, Looking for Groups was still out of order, but this service is now also available.
At the same time, an outage occurred in the West Central US region of Azure. According to Microsoft, there was a power outage that affected “a limited part of the infrastructure” and that the outage only affected a limited number of customers in that region. The outage impacted virtual machines on Azure and SQL Server. In addition, the status board showed that services such as IoT Hub and Cognitive Search were affected.
It’s not clear whether the Azure outage was related to the Xbox Live downtime. Xbox Live does run on Microsoft’s cloud platform, but it has data centers in many more regions worldwide, in addition to West Central US.
