Intel and LG jointly conduct 5G telematics pilot for cars

Intel and LG announced at Mobile World Congress that they will collaborate on developing telematics and piloting it via 5G for cars. The aim of the collaboration is to be the first to be able to offer fully developed 5G services.

Telematics systems are systems that provide remote information, such as a screen. In this case, it concerns information systems in cars that drive at high speed and communicate with other cars, with the infrastructure or with other slow road users via 5G with low latency.

The big difference with 4g, 3g and 2g is that data via 5g can be received up to 33 times faster than via 4g according to LG. This should make it possible to update software over the air and quickly bring video and other multimedia content to car infotainment systems. LG calls its technology V2X or Vehicle to Everything.

LG already supplies several telematics systems for cars using LTE. It is not yet clear what the future should look like with Intel. However, Aicha Evans, vice president of Intel Communications & Devices, thinks Intel’s knowledge of sensors and deep learning will add to LG’s knowledge of automotive telematics.
