The members of the Freebsd Release Engineering Team released version 6.4 of Freebsd on Friday. This is probably the last release in the 6.x series, as version 7.0 has been available for almost nine months. Freebsd was created in 1993 and is developed as an operating system in its entirety. This is in contrast to Linux, for example, where the kernel is maintained by one group of developers and certain applications by others. Because of this, Freebsd is generally considered more stable and robust than other operating systems. Below are the release notes for version 6.4, detailing the major changes in this release:

FreeBSD 6.4-RELEASE Announcement

The FreeBSD Release Engineering Team is pleased to announce the availability of FreeBSD 6.4-RELEASE. At this time 6.4-RELEASE is expected to be the last of the 6-STABLE releases. Some of the highlights:

• New and much-improved NFS Lock Manager (NLM) client
• Support for the Camellia cipher
• boot loader changes allow, among other things, booting from USB devices and booting from GPT-labeled devices with GPT-enabled BIOSes
• DVD install ISO images for amd64/i386
• KDE updated to 3.5.10, GNOME updated to 2.22.3
• Updates for BIND, sendmail, OpenPAM, and others
