Canonical released the first beta release of Ubuntu Linux version 12.10 a few days ago. One of the immediately noticeable things is that the 2d version of the Unity user interface, which older hardware could fall back on, has disappeared. The 3D version has of course been further developed and now includes previews: information about files, folders or programs can be requested with a right-click. Also new is that user accounts are entered in a central place; programs such as email clients can then import them automatically. Of course, the latest applications are also included, such as version 15 of the various Mozilla applications and version 3.6.1 of LibreOffice.

Another notable change is that the installation images no longer fit on a normal CD-ROM. Canonical already had problems with the previous release to keep all software within the 700MB limit and for version 12.10 the limit has been raised to 800MB. This beta is not that big yet, but the desktop versions are already around 750MB. The server versions do fit on a CD-ROM for the time being.
