The United States will restrict the export of artificial intelligence. It concerns the export of software that is used for geographical information systems. This would allow armed drones, among other things, to independently select their targets.

The US government decided on Friday to restrict the export of such technology, with the new rules starting on Monday, Reuters news agency reported. Anyone who still wants to export software to other countries under the new rules must apply for a permit. By the way, Canada is exempt from the regulations.

It specifically concerns artificial intelligence in the field of geospatial imagery. This category includes software that can be used on drones, satellites or sensors to find targets. The US authorities fear that exporting such technology could give enemy governments access to it.

China in particular would be the target of the new regulations. The American and Chinese governments have been in conflict for some time in all kinds of areas, with the acquisition of American technology receiving a lot of attention, among other things.
