Yahoo News app will use AI to recommend and summarize news
Yahoo will use AI for its News app. This should personalize the news feed and provide messages with AI-generated summaries of news items.
With the Yahoo News app users can select topics and media in which they are interested, after which a personalized news selection is made based on algorithms. When users click on a news item, they are first shown an AI-generated summary of the key points. According to Yahoo, users can also block certain keywords and publishers, after which messages containing those words or from those publishers will no longer appear in the overview.
They can also mark headlines as 'clickbait', after which the artificial intelligence will come up with a new headline. The app is currently only available for Android and iOS users in the US. The AI uses technology from Artifact, a similar news service from the founders of Instagram. This service ceased to exist at the beginning of this year, after which Yahoo took over the start-up.
