Developer CD Projekt RED is working on a new standalone single player version of The Witcher 3 card game Gwent. According to IGN, the game is codenamed Project Golden Nekker and will be released sometime this year.

CD Projekt RED has already released teasers about the arrival of the new game in streams about Gwent in recent months, but there is not much concrete information yet. However, the developer has shown some images with concept art.

The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker previously released a spin-off from Gwent, but that’s a different kind of game. That’s more of an RPG with elements from the card game Gwent. The new single player version would be a different kind of game. A spokesperson for the developer called it an “immersive single-player experience for players who prefer it to competitive multiplayer.”

IGN has acquired a new image and with it four images have now appeared in the style of Gwent cards. These are The Barbarian, The Golden Nekker, Living Fire and Fire Elemental. These cards could hint at the playable characters in the game, IGN said.

It is not yet clear when the game will be released. CD Projekt RED would like to announce the game soon. According to Gwent’s roadmap, new maps will be released in April, July, October and December this year. It is likely that new maps from the single player game will come to the multiplayer version.

Gwent was originally a minigame in 2015’s The Witcher 3. The game was released in 2018 as a digital card game for PC, iOS and Android. There was also a console version, but it was dropped. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales was also released in 2018. That is an RPG where the battles take place with Gwent-like cards.
