Ex-Nokia Employees Want to Continue Meego Development

A team of former Nokia employees has set up a company to continue developing the Meego operating system. The company also wants to sell smartphones with the mobile OS itself.

The company, called Jolla, recently launched a Twitter– and set up a LinkedIn page, but formally has been in existence since the fall of 2011. An own website will follow later. The exact plans of the company will also only be announced at a later date, but the company wants to make sure that smartphones with the Meego OS are brought onto the market again in the future. Jolla claims to be working with a number of partners for this, with no companies mentioned by name.

Jolla has indicated that it is still looking for staff to further develop Meego and currently consists of former Nokia employees. It is possible that existing devices will receive support for the Meego releases from Jolla, with the Nokia N950 being a major contender: this device came on the market with Meego. Nokia’s N9 device also runs on Meego and recently received a major update with version number 1.3. Whether the N9 is still supported depends on Nokia according to Jolla.

Meego was released as a combination of Nokia’s Maemo and Intel’s Moblin. Nokia, however, did not want to continue with the mobile OS and focused on Windows Phone. Intel then teamed up with Samsung, after which Meego created the also open source mobile operating system Tizen.
