Canon announces EOS R5 C with full-frame sensor and active cooling
Canon introduces its EOS R5 C. This system camera has the same full-frame sensor with 45-megapixel resolution as the current EOS R5, but will include a fan for active cooling, which enables 8k video recordings without a time limit.
The Canon EOS R5 C is thus a video-oriented variant of the current EOS R5. The camera does not have in-body image stabilization, unlike the regular EOS R5. The new variant is equipped with a larger housing with a weight of 680 grams and a fan for active cooling. According to Canon, this allows the camera to record 8k videos ‘without restrictions’. In a press release, the company talks about “hours-long” 8k recordings. This was not possible with the regular EOS R5.
According to Canon, the system camera also receives certain film functions from cameras from the Cinema EOS series. This also gives the camera the same Cinema EOS interface and additional film options. For example, Canon is introducing new raw options: RAW HQ, RAW ST and RAW LT. The EOS R5 C also supports a frame rate of up to 60fps when using an external power supply, or 30fps on batteries. The camera can also internally capture 12-bit raw images with a bit rate of up to 2.6 Gbit/s. The EOS R5 C also supports HDR in Hlg and PQ formats. Via an external recorder, 8k30 videos can be recorded with Apple ProRes RAW.
In terms of photography, the camera again has a 45-megapixel sensor. The EOS R5 C gets a maximum burst of 20fps with electronic shutter or 12fps with a mechanical shutter. On the back is a tilting 3.2″ LCD and the camera also features a 0.5″ electronic OLED viewfinder with a resolution of 5.76 million pixels. Canon talks about two card slots: one for CFexpress 2.0 cards and an SD card reader. The Canon EOS R5 C will be available in March and will have a suggested retail price of EUR 5030.
