Intel to invest $20 billion in new chip factory in Ohio
Intel’s upcoming chip factory in the US may be located in Ohio. American media report that. Intel previously reported that it has plans for a new chip factory in the US, in addition to the two fabs currently being built in Arizona.
Cleveland.com and Oregon Live claim Intel’s new manufacturing facility will be built in New Albany, near Ohio’s capital Columbus. According to The Columbus Dispatch, an area of 3190 acres is being cleared for the site, which equates to 1,291 acres. Intel previously reported that it wants a location in the US where it can set up multiple factories in the long term.
According to American media, the company will initially invest $ 20 billion in the new production location, but further financial details are unknown. In addition, 3000 employees are expected to work. These investments will probably be expanded in due course. Intel previously said it plans to invest $60 to $120 billion in the longer term in a new, unannounced U.S. manufacturing site and that it should create 10,000 direct jobs in the future. Intel has not yet confirmed that that location will be in Ohio, but the company is expected to make an official announcement soon, according to American media.
Intel has been talking about the arrival of a new chip production location in the United States for some time. The company previously said it wants “a small town” with multiple factories. The company spoke about six to eight ‘fab modules’, which should, for example, focus on producing chips on ‘leading-edge’ nodes, but can also provide packaging for chips using techniques such as EMIB and Foveros.
In addition to the alleged Ohio location, Intel already started construction of two new chip factories in the US state of Arizona last year. Those factories must, among other things, produce chips on the Intel 20A node. Part of the production capacity would also be reserved for external customers; Intel indicated in March that it will also produce chips for other companies.
Also outside the US, Intel plans to expand; among other things, the company wants to set up a large production location in the EU. The company would announce its location in 2021, but has not yet done so. According to anonymous Bloomberg sources, Intel plans to build a chip factory in Germany, set up a research and design department in France and build a testing and assembly division in Italy, although this has not yet been confirmed.
