Leaked renders show full AM5 socket design for Ryzen 7000 CPUs

New details have emerged about AMD’s upcoming AM5 socket. Igor Walllossek of Igor’s Lab has published renders of the socket. As previously confirmed, it concerns an LGA1718 socket. The AM5 platform is planned for the second half of this year.

The renders from Igor’s Lab show a design that somewhat resembles the LGA sockets that Intel has been using for some time. The socket has a kind of frame that is used via a lever to secure the CPU. AM5 would also have a backplate similar to AM4’s, although the new socket will have four additional threads that screw around the socket. AM5 should therefore offer a better grip for coolers compared to Intel’s LGA1700, concludes Igor’s Lab.

AMD announced last week that AM5 will support AM4 coolers. According to Igor’s Lab, the socket again comes with some sort of pre-installed mounting kit with two mounting points and that would be enough to support coolers up to 500 grams. However, heavier coolers should be screwed directly into the backplate, according to the tech website, and the cutouts for this would differ from the current generation of AM4 sockets. Cooler manufacturers should therefore provide a custom backplate to users to allow such coolers to work on AM5.

AMD shared new details about the AM5 platform and the accompanying Ryzen 7000 CPUs last week. AMD will support PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 with that platform and switch to TSMC’s 5nm process with the Ryzen 7000 series. The platform should appear in the second half of this year. AMD says it expects the AM5 platform to be used for a long time, just like the AM4 socket that was introduced in 2017 and is still deployed.
