Rumor: iPhone 14 Pro gets oval hole in screen for Face ID
The iPhone 14 Pro will have an oval camera hole in the screen, which will also house the Face ID hardware. That is what a well-known Apple leaker claims. The functionality of the sensors remains unchanged, according to the leaker.
This is the first time a leaker claims that the camera hole at the top of the phone screen becomes oval, or “pill-shaped,” instead of the familiar circular punch-hole design of other phones. The sensors for the Face ID function would disappear behind the screen. What about Touch ID is not mentioned. It wouldn’t be the first time that a smartphone would get a pill-shaped camera hole. The Samsung Galaxy S10+, for example, also had one.
That the notch will disappear on the iPhone 14 Pro has already been reported in previous rumors from, among others, Jon Prosser. He further stated that the device will have round volume buttons. A thicker housing is also expected, so that the camera island on the back of the device no longer protrudes. Leaker Ming-Chi Kuo previously stated that iPhone models will come with Touch ID behind the screen in 2022, but later reported that Apple has postponed those models to 2023.
