Sony has revealed more details about the successor to the PlayStation VR headset. This is what this PlayStation VR2 will be called and the headset will have a higher resolution of a total of 4000×2040 pixels. The headset also gets inside-out tracking, eliminating the need for a separate camera.

The PlayStation VR2 headset will have an HDR screen, Sony says, and offers a 110-degree field of view. This is 10 degrees more than its predecessor. The refresh rate is equal to the first version at 90Hz or 120Hz. With 2000×2040 pixels per eye, the resolution is higher than the PS VR1, which had a resolution of 960×1080 pixels per eye. As with the first variant, it is an OLED screen.

Where the first version worked with colored LEDs on the headset to be able to track it with a separate camera, this will not be the case with the new headset. The PS VR2 gets four integrated cameras so that inside-out tracking can be done. These cameras are also used to track the controllers.

Inside the headset are also cameras, one per eye, to track the eyes. For example, users can move their eyes to control a game and the headset can apply foveated rendering. The headset also gets a vibration motor to transmit vibrations to the user, such as an increased heart rate during tense moments.

Sony also announces that the controllers of the PS VR2 headset will be called PlayStation VR2 Sense. Few new details are announced about this, although the company does show the teaser below. Previously, Sony said these controllers would get adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and finger detection. Communication between the console and the headset is via a single USB Type-C cable. The controllers are also charged with such a cable.

In addition to the name and technical details, the first PS VR2 game has also been announced. Guerrilla Games is collaborating with Firesprite on Horizon Call of the Mountain. Little is known about this game, other than that it will be a first-person VR game. Prices and release dates for the headset and game are unknown. Sony has also not yet shared images of the new headset. According to an earlier rumor, the headset will be released at the end of this year.
