TV manufacturers form organization to support 8k TV ecosystem
Panel manufacturer AU Optronics and several television manufacturers have formed the 8K Association. This is a non-profit organization that aims to promote 8k content, establish the minimum requirements for the 8k TVs and introduce a logo program.
The launch of the 8K Association was launched at the CES trade show in Las Vegas. The founders of the organization are AU Optronics, Panasonic, Hisense, TCL and Samsung. According to the organization, panel manufacturer Samsung Display is also in a process to join the association. The manufacturers recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding, establishing the 8K Association. A few big names are missing from the list of participating companies, such as LG, LG Display and Sony. There are also currently missing content creators such as Netflix or Amazon.
The goal of the organization is to support the 8k TV ecosystem. For example, the aim is to promote 8k TVs and 8k content to consumers and professionals and educate them about the 8k ecosystem. It is also planned to work on 8k content and encourage service providers to develop 8k content. Technical requirements also need to be developed for the 8k input signals, as well as 8k television categories and minimum specifications for picture quality. It is not yet known which specifications will become part of the logo program for 8k TVs.
The website FlatpanelsdHD reports that Chris Chinnock, the director of the 8K Association, said in a press conference that there are quite a few challenges and that 8k TVs may take longer to market than 4k TVs. According to him, this has to do with the fact that large TVs are needed to take advantage of 8k. Distributors are also still dubious and there is still little content. Only in Japan is there now a relatively reasonable amount of 8k content; In December last year, the Japanese public broadcaster started up a channel that only broadcasts images in 8k.
As part of the CES fair, several manufacturers have introduced 8k TVs. For example, LG showed 8k OLED TVs with different screen sizes and Sony showed an 8k TV with a screen diagonal of 98″. Samsung already released 8k TVs for consumers last year and recently announced it would add a 98″ model. .
