Fallout 3 Modification Project Using Fallout 4 Engine Has Rebooted

The makers of a Fallout 4 mod, called Fallout 4: Capital Wasteland, have announced that work is back on the project. The work came to a standstill last year because the team feared it would face legal troubles over the use of official, original audio.

The makers let it be known that they have been working on recreating Capital Wasteland for some time now. In addition, the team has decided to no longer use the original Fallout 3 voice conversations and other official audio files. Instead, all spoken texts are spoken again. This should remove any risks of facing any copyright claims.

In March 2018, the team was still in contact with Bethesda about the intention to use the official voice work from Fallout 3 in the mod. During those conversations, it became clear that this could lead to unforeseen consequences, after which the team decided to abandon the project of the mod. The mod’s project lead stated that he would be personally liable for any claims, a risk he no longer wanted to take, Polygon wrote. As far as we know, Bethesda has never filed a claim.

The team behind the mod now has to re-record the approximately 45,000 spoken phrases from Fallout 3. Partly because this entails quite a bit of extra work, the team is looking for voice actors, but also designers, for example. It is unclear when the makers are expected to release the mod.

Capital Wasteland is in fact a remaster of Fallout 3 with the graphical capabilities of Fallout 4. In January of last year, the makers of the modification reported that they had made considerable progress and that at least 40 percent of the world from Fallout 3 had been recreated at the time. .
