Sony to stop the Resistance franchise for the time being

Sony Computer Entertainment has no plans for the time being to develop a new installment in the Resistance franchise. Asked about the future of the series, a spokesperson indicated that nothing is being done with Resistance for the time being.

In an interview with the UK’s Official PlayStation Magazine, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Daniel Brooke said the company has no plans with the franchise. “It was fun working on the Resistance franchise, but we have no plans for it going forward,” Brooke told OPM.

Brooke thus confirms that there will be no new Resistance game for the foreseeable future. That is not very surprising, because Insomniac, the studio behind the Resistance franchise, previously indicated that it would no longer make a new Resistance game. Studio director Ted Price then announced that Resistance would be moving to development studio Nihilistic. That studio was responsible for the Vita game Resistance: Burning Skies, released in May. That game, however, was disappointing, with an average Metacritic score of 59. While that may be a reason to discontinue the series, Brooke does not report that Sony has cut the Resistance franchise completely. It seems that the door to a later sequel to the successful PlayStation 3 series is still open.

The series started by Insomniac made its debut in 2007 with Resistance: Fall of Man, which was a launch title for the PlayStation 3. In 2008 and 2011, Resistance 2 and 3, also made by Insomniac, were released. For the PlayStation Portable, the 2009 spin-off Resistance: Retribution, made by SCE Bend Studio, was released, and Burning Skies recently appeared as the fifth and final game in the franchise.
