Germans can also get Gmail.com address

Eight years after Gmail was introduced, German residents can finally create an @gmail.com address again. In April, Google ended a seven-year legal battle over the Gmail brand name in Germany.

Until now, Germans could not use the Gmail service with an @gmail.com address, but only with an @googlemail.com address. That has now changed and all Germans will soon be able to switch to a Gmail address, Google has announced. New accounts automatically have Gmail.com as a suffix.

Google was banned from using the Gmail brand name in Germany for years. In 2005, when Google also wanted to introduce Gmail in Germany, the company was sued by the owner of the brand name ‘G-Mail’ in Germany. The court ruled in favor of that owner and only recently was Google able to complete the legal battle. An amount of money was probably paid, but it is unknown how much.
