OnePlus Two gets Snapdragon 810-soc ‘without overheating problems’
OnePlus gives its upcoming Two smartphone an improved version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810-soc. This would be optimized and therefore not suffer from overheating, a common problem with smartphones with this soc.
The company makes this known via a post on its community forum. The Snapdragon 810 will be built into the upcoming OnePlus Two, the current top model soc from chip designer Qualcomm. OnePlus also mentions that a new version of the chip has been chosen, with number 2.1. The manufacturer states that it has collaborated with Qualcomm to further ‘fine tune’ the chip, so as not to suffer from overheating problems. Placing thermal paste and graphite in the right places on the chip, among other things, should ensure that the heat spreads better and therefore does not concentrate on one location. The rest of the hardware and software is also aimed at preventing overheating, but OnePlus does not specify that further.
Qualcomm has been struggling with problems with its Snapdragon 810 soc for some time now. During development, problems with overheating arose, making it briefly seem that manufacturers had to postpone their high-end smartphones. After the release, reports came in from users who complained about performance problems due to overheating: including owners of the HTC One M9. Version 2.1 of the chip is also already used in other devices, such as the Sony Xperia Z3+, and there are also problems with heat.
Furthermore, OnePlus states that it has optimized its self-developed OxygenOS, a slightly modified version of Android, to run on the Snapdragon 810. The software is said to be focused on choosing the right core for a particular task. For example, the fast Cortex A57 cores have to handle tasks that require a lot of computing power, while light tasks are assigned to the slower but more economical Cortex A53 cores. The Snapdragon 810 has four of both types of computing cores, and there is also the Adreno 430 GPU.
OnePlus will later provide more information about the specifications of the Two, which should follow the popular One smartphone. The company has been developing it for some time, and the device is rumored to be released sometime in the summer. In all likelihood, the OnePlus Two will be more expensive than its predecessor.
