Sony promises update to address heat problems Xperia Z3+

Sony will make an update available this summer that should reduce overheating problems in the Xperia Z3+. This week many complaints appeared about heat problems of the device, which among other things causes the camera to suddenly stop working.

Sony acknowledged in a statement that the device “may generate additional heat under some circumstances that could cause an application, such as the camera app, to close.” The user could also feel the heat at the back, but this is not a cause for concern, according to the company. In the summer, Sony will make an update available that should prevent the extra warm production ‘during normal use’.

Earlier this week, a video from Btekt showed that the device could become so hot that the camera shut itself off and the device showed warnings about the high temperature. Later this week, complaints from Japan appeared on the internet, where the device was released on Tuesday under the name Xperia Z4. The provider NTT Docomo also warned of heat problems, Xperiablog wrote.

The cause of the problems lies with the Snapdragon 810 processor. There have been reports for some time about the heat that this soc causes, including the HTC M9. HTC has managed to curb the temperatures by applying throttling: the soc clocks back when it gets too hot. Sony may do the same with the Xperia Z3+.

Sony uses a 2.1 revision of the 810 Snapdragon, with Qualcomm supposedly making optimizations related to thermal management. They therefore do not seem sufficient to prevent problems with smartphones. The Xperia Z4 tablet also uses the soc, but it is not known whether there are also problems with this device.
