Chrome appears to be getting web Bluetooth support

Developers working on the Chrome browser seem to want to add web Bluetooth to the browser. Web Bluetooth allows a browser to use Bluetooth-enabled peripherals via an underlying API. The technology is already used in Firefox OS.

The possible arrival of web Bluetooth to Chrome is inferred from a recent commit in the open source Chromium code, which is also used by Google’s Chrome browser. Web Bluetooth, which developers of the W3C tinker with, communicate with Bluetooth hardware via the browser’s dom API. For example, web bluetooth regulates the secure pairing of peripherals and the setting of bluetooth equipment.

Mozilla already uses web Bluetooth in Firefox OS, the mobile operating system of the Firefox developer. For example, the browser-oriented Firefox OS can directly address peripherals wirelessly from a mobile phone or tablet. Google may see opportunities to start using web Bluetooth for Chromebooks.
