Microsoft may stop with version numbers Windows

Windows 10 may be the last version of Windows with a version number. After that, Microsoft may want to continuously update the system components, without the release of new full versions of Windows.

A Microsoft developer evangelist called Windows 10 “the latest version of Windows” at his Ignite conference, The Verge noted. When asked, Microsoft told that tech site that the comments “made on Ignite about Windows 10 reflect how Windows will be marketed as a service.” Updates must be released regularly.

Microsoft thus more or less confirms that a new Windows version with its own version number will no longer be released, but that the company will gradually update Windows and provide it with new functionality. Version numbers will continue to exist in the background, but they will no longer be communicated to the outside world. The policy may also mean the end of “patch tuesday” for Windows: the monthly day on which Microsoft rolls out security updates.

Microsoft has previously indicated that Windows will be offered more as a service, ‘Windows-as-a-service’, with the operating system being gradually updated, whether or not via the Windows Store. It is unclear how this will be funded. The company has previously denied coming up with a subscription model.
