Apple sells more iPhones but fewer iPads
Apple sold 61.2 million iPhones in the past quarter; 40 percent more than a year earlier. The number of Macs sold also rose, albeit slightly. However, there is not only good news: the number of iPads sold fell sharply.
In addition to the 61.2 million iPhones sold, Apple sold 12.6 million iPads, Apple announced at the presentation of its quarterly figures for the first quarter of this year. In the broken financial year of the company, that is the second quarter. Compared to a year earlier, iPhone sales increased 40 percent. iPhone sales were slightly lower in the fourth quarter, but that’s common, thanks to the holiday season; it is more reliable to compare sales figures with a year earlier.
In contrast to the number of iPhones sold, the number of iPads sold by Apple decreased. Where Apple sold 16.4 million iPads a year ago, there were only 12.6 million in the past quarter; a 23 percent decrease. The number of Macs sold did increase: from 4.1 million to 4.6 million, an increase of 10 percent.
Last year, Apple earned by far the most from the sale of iPhones: 40.2 billion dollars, or 37 billion euros. iPad sales amounted to $5.4 billion; the one out of Macs at $5.6 billion, making Apple more money from Macs than iPads for the first time in a long time. Earnings from Apple’s services, such as iCloud and the App Store, amounted to $4.9 billion.
In total, Apple had $58 billion in revenue in the first quarter, with a profit of $13.6 billion. A year ago, that was $45.6 billion in revenue and $10.2 billion in profit, respectively.
