Next fall, Google smartphones will feature a new proprietary soc codenamed “GS101 Whitechapel.” That claims the editors of 9to5Google based on a report that it could view.

According to 9to5Google, two smartphones with the Whitechapel chip would be released this fall, currently codenamed “Raven” and “Oriole”. The new chip would have been developed in collaboration with Samsung and have a lot in common with Samsung’s Exynos platform. This mention of a partnership with Samsung is not new. Previous rumors have suggested that the American search giant will use the South Korean company’s 5nm process to bake mobile chips.

With this move, Google seems to be following in the footsteps of competitor Apple, which is already using its own soc designs in multiple devices. Google’s soc should help improve the performance of, among other things, machine learning and always-on applications of the Google Assistant.

Google announced late last month that it will also design its own socs for servers. For this, the company hired Uri Frank, a former CEO of Intel who, among other things, contributed to the Core processor architecture. Frank was appointed as vice president of engineering and, following Amazon, must ensure that Google will also have its own server socs in the future.
