Spotify redesigns desktop and web application with extra playlist functions

The web and desktop versions of music streaming service Spotify will get a new design that should match the other apps of the service. It should, among other things, become easier to add songs and podcasts to playlists.

Spotify claims that the new design is cleaner and should give users more control. For example, with the update, users can search for external songs within a playlist, in order to be able to add them. Users can also adjust the photo of such a playlist, write descriptions and drag songs to playlists in more ways. For example, the update makes it possible to drag the song that the user is currently listening to to the playlist.

With the new design, the search bar in the desktop application that was always at the top of the screen disappears. Instead, there will be a search button on the left under Home. Below this search button is a library button. The Browse and Radio buttons in the current desktop version will disappear. Starting a radio session should be easier with the update, because users can start a radio session with any song or artist via a right-click menu. The update also shows listener profiles what their favorite songs and artists are.

The update also brings other, smaller changes. For example, the toggle to download playlists now becomes a button. Desktop users can also sort their library and use more keyboard shortcuts. With the update, users can find out those shortcuts by pressing control and question mark simultaneously in the desktop version. The revamped Spotify design will be coming to users in the coming weeks.
