Kuo: Apple tests E Ink color panel as second screen for foldable device

Apple may be testing E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that color screen is being tested as a ‘cover display’ for foldable devices and ‘tablet-like applications’ of the tech giant.

Apple would test the E Ink color panel, among other things, as a second screen that is on the ‘outside’ of a folding device, Kuo reports on Twitter. Such a screen is used when a folding device is closed. The screen on the inside would then use a more advanced panel, such as an amoled screen. The color screen of E Ink would be well suited as a second screen, because it consumes relatively little power, the analyst writes.

Rumors have been circulating for some time that Apple is working on foldable devices, but the tech giant has not yet officially confirmed this. At the beginning of last month, Kuo . wrote that Apple may be working on a device with a foldable 9″ OLED screen. Once unfolded, that device would have a screen diagonal that falls between an iPhone and an iPad. The analyst also reported that Apple will probably have a foldable iPhone in 2025 at the earliest. or iPad comes.

Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman also reported earlier this year that Apple is presumably working on some sort of foldable Macbook. That device would consist entirely of a 20-inch screen on the inside, which can be folded in half. DSCC analyst Ross Young endorsed that message and reported that such a Macbook will probably only be released after 2025.
