Apple confirms that it has taken action against Beeper Mini. The American tech giant says it has blocked techniques that prevent third parties with ‘fake login details’ from using iMessage.

Apple says in a statement to 9to5Google that these techniques pose ‘significant security and privacy risks’. The company refers to message metadata that can become visible and believes that these techniques can also encourage unwanted messages, spam and phishing messages. Apple says it wants to continue to provide such updates in the future to continue to ‘protect’ iMessage users.

Beeper Mini is an iMessage client for Android. The messaging service was unveiled earlier this week. The makers behind Beeper Mini promised that Android users could use iMessage through the app to chat with iOS users using iMessage. Beeper Mini users had access to all features within iMessage, including the blue chat bubbles. The client uses a reverse-engineered iMessage stack to communicate directly with Apple’s servers, allowing it to receive locally encrypted and decrypted iMessage messages. An Apple ID is also not required for this. The service costs $2 per month.

Three days after the release of Beeper Mini, the service no longer worked. Users had indicated that messages could no longer be sent and received. The developers of Beeper Mini say they are working on a fix for the problem. At the time of writing it might for some users be possible again to use iMessage via Beeper Cloud: the messaging app’s cloud environment.
