THX Introduces First Consumer Product With Smartphone Dac Amplifier Onyx
THX has unveiled its first consumer product. Onyx is a mobile dac amplifier mainly intended to improve the sound quality of wired headphones connected to, for example, a smartphone.
The THX Onyx consists of the dac amplifier which has a 3.5mm port on one side for the headphones and a USB-C cable on the other side to connect to a smartphone. The dac has THX AAA 78 and ESS Pro DAC chips and support for the MQA codec. According to THX, the AAA-78 chip is just as powerful as a desktop THX AAA dac amplifier, only in a smaller size. This small chip provides ‘infinitely small levels’ of noise and distortion. The chip also enables a wider dynamic range and louder volume.
The device contains magnets to hold the cable of the headphones, so that the cable does not get in the way of the user while listening to music. The housing of the Onyx is made of metal. The Onyx is now available in Europe for 210 euros. Whether THX will also make other consumer devices is unknown.
