Ten years after the release of League of Legends, creator Riot Games has announced League of Legends: Wild Rift. This is basically a special version of the popular moba game for mobile devices and consoles, with much the same gameplay. The game will be released in 2020.

Riot Games reports that League of Legends: Wild Rift will feature the same 5v5 battles as the regular League of Legends. The playing field is largely based on the traditional playing field called Summoner’s Rift, including adjustments to make it work better on the new platforms. The developer says he built Wild Rift from the ground up, so it’s not a direct port of the existing PC version.

Rounds in League of Legends: Wild Rift are faster than the matches on the PC version, with only 40 champions available at the start, while the PC version has 145 champions. Riot says more champions will follow at a later date after release. As with the regular League of Legends, Wild Rift will have a competitive section with rankings.

At the end of this year, Wild Rift will be available in alpha and beta versions, starting in China. Players can pre-register for the Android version. The developer says it plans to have the mobile game fully live worldwide by the end of next year, with the console version set to come out “sometime after that.” Riot will provide more information about the console version next year. There is no crossplay available between the regular PC version and Wild Rift, but players can use their existing accounts.

The new game can be downloaded for free and according to Riot, all champions can be earned for free. Probably a system will be used as is already present in the regular League of Legends. By playing rounds, points are earned that can be used to unlock champions, for example. According to Riot, players have the option to support the game by spending money through microtransactions, mainly on skins for the champions.
