Microsoft comes with a solution for broken Lumias after Windows 10 use

Microsoft has released a new version of its recovery tool for Windows Phone. This should offer a solution for users who are struggling with a broken smartphone after going back from Windows 10 to Windows Phone 8.1. Especially the Lumia 520 and 525 had problems.

On a community page of the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft has detailed the issues affecting Lumia users. The cause is not yet fully unraveled, but it is known that it has something to do with the speed at which data is written during the reinstallation of Windows Phone 8.1 via the recovery tool. Some low-end devices might not be able to handle the write speed, causing data corruption.

Microsoft has released a new version of its recovery tool to fix the issues. The block size of the data has been reduced from 2MB to 128KB and the write speed has been reduced from 8Mbyte/s to 5Mbyte/s. Tests have shown that this is a possible solution for users who have a broken smartphone after reinstalling Windows Phone 8.1.

Earlier this week, reports came out that users who had installed build 10051 of Windows 10 and wanted to go back to Windows Phone 8.1 encountered problems. Users of the Lumia 520 and 525 reported that their device was stuck in flash mode and that it would not boot. Build 10051 is therefore no longer distributed to users of these devices. According to Microsoft, the update program will be resumed as soon as it appears that the fix for the recovery tool actually solves the problems.
