Mozilla is putting the finishing touches to Firefox for iOS. That says a tech site based on a document, of which Mozilla itself has confirmed the authenticity. The browser builder would launch a marketing campaign to recruit more users.

There are no further details and images of Firefox for iOS. Techcrunch does report that Mozilla wants to differentiate Firefox from competitors such as Chrome and Internet Explorer by focusing its marketing on privacy options in the browser. Whether this also applies to the iOS version is unknown.

The marketing campaign, which should start next month, is necessary because, according to Mozilla itself, there is an “alarming” trend of a declining market share for Firefox. The browser, which won a lot of market share as the first alternative to Internet Explorer 6 ten years ago, is currently seeing many of its users move to Chrome, among others.

It was already known that Mozilla was working on a Firefox for iOS, but when the browser should be released has remained unclear until now. Mozilla previously released Firefox Home for iOS, but it wasn’t a full browser. While Mozilla itself is not confirming the release, it has told TechCrunch that the document it is in is authentic. Mozilla has confirmed that two of its top executives, Li Gong and Rick Frant, are leaving.

Update, 11:11: Tweaker MediQ has found the Firefox for iOS project on GitHub. There are also concept images, including the one next to the article. Based on the code, it appears that Firefox for iOS uses Apple’s Webkit engine, as directed by the iPhone maker. Firefox on other platforms uses Mozilla’s proprietary Gecko engine.
