Samsung will release a new fix for 840 EVO SSDs at the end of April
Samsung will release new firmware for 840 EVO SSDs at the end of this month that should solve performance problems with the SSD. The company previously came up with a fix, but it only solved the problem temporarily.
PC Perspective tested a beta version of the new EXT0DB6Q firmware, which will be distributed to users by the end of this month. It seems that the firmware update addresses the degradation issues, using an algorithm that provides a periodic refresh to maintain the read speed of old files.
Two months ago, Samsung already announced that it would re-investigate the ongoing problems with the 840 EVO SSDs. In October last year, Samsung came up with a fix that restored the reading performance in the relevant situations, but in the long run the speed of the drive appeared to drop again.
Users reported since August last year that the reading speed of their 840 EVO SSD sometimes dropped sharply. Files older than a month were read at speeds between 50 and 60MB/s, while the read speed was normally over 450MB/s.
