Unity gets support for New Nintendo 3DS
Unity Technologies announces that it plans to build support for the New Nintendo 3DS into its own Unity game engine. It will allow Nintendo as well as all four million registered Unity users to create games for the Japanese company’s handheld.
Unity Technologies announced the move during Unite 2015, a trade show that the company organizes itself for developers who use the engine. There, the company announced that the Unity engine will receive support for the New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL that were released this year. That is, anyone who has a license to the engine can make games for Nintendo’s handhelds. According to Unity, four million licenses have now been closed. It is not yet known when Unity will support the new 3DS.
The fact that Unity Technologies offers support for the New Nintendo 3DS is a logical step. Unity is especially popular as an engine for creating mobile games. In addition, Unity Technologies has been working with Nintendo for some time. Since 2012, the engine has supported the Wii U. A license for Unity is even included as standard with the developer kits that Nintendo releases.
Support for the 3DS is likely to come as an update to version 5 of the engine, which was released earlier this year. Unity already works with Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, WebGL, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Android TV, Oculus Rift and Gear VR. The engine is free to use under certain conditions.
