Sony’s revenues rise thanks to PlayStation 4
Sony sold 6.4 million PS4s and 1.1 million PS3s in the months around the holiday season. This increased sales of the latest console at the expense of the older PS3. Sony sold 1.4 million units of its handhelds in the PS Vita line.
In addition to the good figures, the results for the Vita and Vita TV were worse than expected. Sony’s move to exit the PC market is also costing the company money, of which 1.4 billion yen, about 11 million euros, is for restructuring.
The deliveries of Sony’s Xperia smartphones are on the rise. The manufacturer sold 11.9 million units, compared to 10.7 million in the same quarter at the end of 2013. This means that deliveries are growing less quickly than that of the total smartphone market.
The operating profit of the gaming division is 15.2 billion yen or 118 million euros. Total consolidated earnings for the nine months ended December 31, 2014 increased 6.5 percent to 6,278 billion yen, or 49 billion euros, and total operating profit was 166.3 billion yen, or 1.3 billion euros. 28 billion yen higher than the year before.
