Microsoft’s Band smartwatch and fitness bracelet has received a software update that includes support for cycling. An SDK has also become available with which developers can build apps for the smart bracelet.

The update is now rolling out in the form of app updates for Android, Windows Phone, and iOS. The support for cycling ensures, among other things, that users can monitor their heart rate and calorie consumption while cycling. Guided workouts are also available, where the bracelet-cum-fitness tracker gives directions, and users can see how long it takes them to recover from a workout according to the Microsoft Band.

In addition, Band users will have access to a web portal where they can gain insights into the statistics collected by the wearable. The Band can also be linked to two other services with which health can be tracked: Microsoft HealthVault from Microsoft itself and MapMyFitness.

There seems to be a good chance that other apps will be added soon, now that Microsoft has released an SDK. It is still a Developer Preview for now.
