Disney is postponing the next three Star Wars films for a year
The three still unnamed Star Wars films that Disney and Lucasfilm are working on have been postponed for a year due to the corona pandemic. The next film will now be released in December 2023, after which we will have to wait until the end of 2025 and the last month of 2027.
Star Wars fans will have to wait longer before heading back to theaters for another dose of lightsaber combat. The battle between the light and dark sides of the Force will not continue on the silver screen until the end of 2023.
Disney has made major changes to its release calendar for the coming years due to the corona pandemic, Deadline reports. As a result, the Star Wars movie that was scheduled for December 16, 2022 is now shifting to a release on December 22, 2023.
Details about the film are not yet known, but Disney previously made it clear that Taika Waititi, the director of Thor Ragnarok, is working on a film in the series. Presumably this is about the film that has now been postponed to the end of 2023.
Disney and Lucasfilm have two more Star Wars films on the agenda, presumably the three films together form a new trilogy and the start of a new saga. No substantive details are yet known of the two other new films, but it is clear that they have been moved to a release on December 19, 2025 and December 17, 2027.
The last Star Wars movie to be released was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in late 2019. With that movie, the Skywalker saga, which includes a total of nine movies, closed. Disney previously announced that the Star Wars franchise would take a break and that the next film would not follow soon.
