The maker of fixed telephony devices Gigaset will launch smartphones this year. The manufacturer will integrate the smartphones into its platform for smart homes and let users control their home telephones with it.

The arrival to the smartphone market is announced by the German Gigaset CEO Charles Fränkl, in an interview with the Süddeutschen Zeitung. The former Siemens subsidiary has the devices built in China, by a partner company that involves the largest investor in Gigaset, Pan Sutong from Hong Kong.

Fränkl does not give details about the aircraft. “Last year, about 60 million DECT phones were sold. We delivered about a third of that. At the same time, more than a billion smartphones were delivered. That’s the big difference,” he said about the reason for entering the smartphone market. The intention is that the smartphones will function as a remote control for smart homes and there must also be possibilities to manage fixed telephones, according to the CEO.

Gigaset already makes tablets and the group also has dect phones based on Android.
