HTC will release an update for the action camera Re on Friday, making it possible to stream images directly to YouTube. However, the feature is only available if the action camera is linked to an Android smartphone. An iOS version will be rolled out at a later date.

Owners of a Re can update the corresponding smartphone app from Friday. The user must then log in to YouTube and activate the live streaming feature. HTC indicates in the announcement that the action then only needs to be verified before the live streaming can be started.

The footage is sent to YouTube via the smartphone. Users can choose to share the video with everyone, but a private mode is also available. The images can thus be shared with specific people. Users can invite others to watch their videos via text message, as well as via social media. The link remains active after the broadcast, so that the footage can also be viewed at a later time.

It is still unclear when the update for iOS devices will be rolled out. HTC is sticking to the first quarter of 2015 for the time being. The action camera can also store recordings on a micro-SD card, but videos can also be stored on the smartphone or in the cloud. HTC introduced the camera in October. The device is shaped like a periscope and can record videos in 1080p.
