Netgear launches two new ReadyNAS models
Netgear announced two new NAS models in its ReadyNAS line at CES. Both the 2-bay ReadyNAS 202 and the 4-bay ReadyNAS 204 feature a dual-core ARM soc. According to Netgear, the storage systems can achieve throughput speeds of up to 200MB/s.
The ReadyNAS 202 features an Annapurna AL212 ARM soc. It is a dual-core processor with a clock speed of 1.4GHz. The NAS also has 2GB of RAM, can accommodate two hard drives or SSDs and supports up to 12TB of gross storage. There are two gigabit Ethernet connections on the ReadyNAS 202, as well as three USB 3.0 connections and an ESATA input.
Netgear has supplied the ReadyNAS 204 with identical hardware, but it supports a maximum of 24TB of gross storage with its four drive bays. Furthermore, the company claims that the NAS systems can achieve throughput speeds of up to 200MB/s.
To be able to access data on the storage systems remotely, Netgear has developed the ReadyCloud software. In addition to a web interface, there are also mobile apps available for Android and iOS smartphones. In addition, Netgear uses the btrfs file system on installed drives by default. The manufacturer states that this relatively new file system stores data more securely, thanks in part to mechanisms such as snapshot technology and point-in-time recovery. Replication of data to cloud storage services would also be easier thanks to btrfs.
The RN202 and RN204 will be launched in the US at the end of January. The 2-bay version should cost $360, or slightly more than $300, while the 4-bay nas should fetch $500, roughly $420.
