LG and Mercedes-Benz have signed a cooperation agreement on the supply of parts for autonomous driving cars. LG is going to develop a stereo camera system for the German automaker.

The camera system is one of the central components of autonomous cars. It allows the car to detect movements that the driver may overlook. The system can issue warnings or even be linked to the brakes to intervene autonomously.

“LG has advanced IT technology and imagesensing that help make the parts for Mercedes-Benz,” said an LG spokesperson, according to Korean news service Yonhap. Mercedes-Benz is seen as a pioneer in the field of autonomous driving. The company provides models with its Intelligent Drive system, among other things. The collaboration gives LG a foothold in the growth market of automotive applications. In many countries, equipping cars with camera systems will probably become mandatory in order to reduce the number of accidents.
