Infinity Ward denies working on loot boxes for new Modern Warfare game
Infinity Ward denies working on loot boxes or supply drops for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot. The developer is thus responding to rumors about the arrival of such elements.
Joel Emslie, studio art director of Infinity Ward, says his statements reflect incorrect information circulating. He says on reddit: “We are definitely not working on any kind of supply drops or a loot box system. Functional things are unlocked through gameplay.” He also indicates that the studio will provide more information about this next week. In recent times, there have been rumors about the arrival of loot boxes and supply drops in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The recent beta shows direct references to supply drops.
The developer’s statements do not rule out that supply drops or other forms of loot boxes will be added to the game at a later date. In the past, Activision has added such elements to games after release. Black Ops 4 received loot boxes four months after the game came out. Even if there are no loot boxes or supply drops in the game, that doesn’t mean there aren’t other microtransactions. For example, the game could offer players cosmetic items in a store with no loot box mechanism.
Activision and Infinity Ward announced that there will be no paid DLC for the game when they announced the Modern Warfare reboot. All expansions with new maps will be made available for free. It is likely that the publisher will come up with other ways to earn extra money from the game. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare comes out on October 25.
