Blizzard to stop developing MMO Titan after seven years

Titan, an mmo game that Blizzard has been working on for seven years, will not be released. Blizzard has canceled the game, the publisher’s CEO announced in an interview. Earlier, Blizzard already cut into the development team.

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime revealed the news in an interview with games site Polygon. “We’ve evaluated whether this is really the game we want to make. The answer is no,” said Morhaime. The development of Titan started seven years ago, a few years after the introduction of World of Warcraft. “We were convinced we knew how to make MMOs,” said Morhaime. “So we started on the most ambitious project you can imagine. But we couldn’t make it happen.”

Titan, the game’s working title, has never been officially announced, although the game studio has released a few things about the game in recent years. For example, in a phone call with investors last year, Morhaime said the game would likely be playable without a subscription, unlike World of Warcraft. Earlier in 2013, the developer already indicated that the team working on the game had been reduced from 100 to 30 people. Also, the direction of the game would be ‘redetermined’.

Earth history and mythology are rumored to have served as the starting point for the game. The Greeks, Romans and Vikings would be central to this. In addition, players would be able to travel through time and use all kinds of weapons, from guns to magical weapons.

Chris Metzen, who manages story and game series development at Blizzard, told Polygon that the decision to quit the game is “torture.” Still, the decision would have been necessary. “Knowing when to stop is important,” Metzen told Polygon. Blizzard CEO Morhaime agrees: “It always results in better work.”
