YouTube tests simplified choice for image quality videos

YouTube is in beta testing where users are only presented with four options when changing video image quality settings. Selecting a specific resolution is under the advanced option.

In the test with the simplified image quality options, the setting defaults to the recommended ‘Auto’, with YouTube itself determining the settings based on the screen resolution and bandwidth. In addition, there is the option for ‘high image quality’, with the message that it consumes more data.

The third option in the row is ‘data saver’, with a lower image quality. Finally, there is ‘advanced’, where users can choose a specific resolution themselves. The latter option gives users the menu that is now the default menu for all YouTube users, listing it from 144p to 4k resolution.

The new settings are in version 15.45.32 in the beta channel of the YouTube app on Android, 9to5Google notes. It is not known whether this is a worldwide test. Nor is it known whether the settings will come to the final YouTube app and site, and if so, when.
