KDE’s desktop environment Plasma 6 will be released on February 28, 2024
KDE will release its Plasma 6 desktop environment on February 28 next year. This is the first KDE desktop environment based on the Qt6 framework. The Qt6-based Gear apps and KDE Frameworks 6 should also be released on that date.
The date of February 28 is a slight postponement of what was communicated in September; then KDE was still talking about early February. In addition to the public release date, KDE reports that the first alpha version should be released on November 8, followed by two betas on November 29 and December 20. The first Release Candidate version should be released on January 10.
Qt6 is a development framework and offers a more modern UI compared to previous versions. Not all Gear apps may have been ported to Qt6 in February. Plasma 6 will be KDE’s first major release since version 5 in 2014, although several updates have been released for Plasma 5 since then. KDE announced in June that Plasma 6 was ready for testing.
